WNY High-School Wrestling: Eastern States Round Up – Day 1

A total of sixteen wrestlers from seven Section VI schools competed today at the annual Eastern States Classic held at Sullivan County Community College in Lake Sheldrake, NY. This tournament has become one of the premier high school wrestling events in the north east in only its sixteenth year. In fact, it has become so powerful that it is now taken into consideration for seeding criteria at the final New York State wrestling tournament held in February. The 2018 edition is being represented by 166 schools from six states, including the powerful Wyoming Seminary who ran away with last weekend’s NFWOA Tournament team title, as well as both of last years’ New York State large and small school team champions in Hilton (Section V) and Central Valley Academy (Section III), respectively. Here is a rundown of how the Section VI representatives did on day one.

106-pounds: Lancaster’s Jacob Harry defeated Odysseus Lauca from Plainedge (Sec. VIII-Nassau Co/Long Is) by decision 5-3 in the Round of 32. Harry met Myles Griffin from CBA/Jamesville-Dewitt (Sec. III-Syracuse/CNY) in the next round and lost by fall in the first period. In the second round of consolations Harry defeated Mike Sanfillipo from Chaminade (CHSAA) by decision 2-1. Harry will face Jack Schneider of MacArthur (VIII) in tomorrow morning’s consolation round of eight.

113: Lancaster’s Parker Rozler lost a decision to Gavin Damasco from Commack (Sec. XI-Suffolk Co/Long Is) in the first round by a score of 3-0. In the following consolation round Rozler defeated Hunter Potts from Churchville-Chili (Sec. V-Rochester/Genesee Valley) by forfeit to move on to the consolation round of sixteen. Rozler lost a decision to Sean Carter from North Babylon (XI) and was eliminated from the tournament.

Aiden Rabideau of Clarence defeated Evan Matias from Rocky Point (XI) in the first round by way of a third period pin. Rabideau then met Marek Bush from CVA (III) in the round of sixteen and lost by pin in the first period. In his first round of wrestle backs Rabideau met Zac Cummings from Salem-Cambridge (Sec. II-Albany region) and earned a first period pin to advance to the consolation round of eight. Rabideau will wrestle Rich Munoz from Ward Melville (XI) in tomorrow morning’s wrestle back.

126: Wheatfield’s defending state finalist Justin McDougald was looking to bounce back from a fourth place finish at the NFWOA Tournament this weekend. The Falcon standout is seeded fourth in this tournament and got to work quickly with a first period pin of Nick Calderone from Newfield (XI) in the first round. McDougald then defeated Tyler Albis from John Jay-E. Fishkill (Sec. I-Hudson River Valley) by decision 3-0 to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinal. He will square off with fellow all-state wrestler in fifth seeded Michael Gonyea of Columbia (II).

Iroquois’s Colton Slade dropped a preliminary round match to Nick Calderone 9-3. In the next round of consolations, the Chief senior met Matt Patrizio from Commack and lost by major decision, 11-3.

132: Willie McDougald from Niagara Falls, seeded sixth in the tournament, continued his outstanding season with a major decision of James Rado from Miller Place (XI) 12-0 in the first round followed by another MD of Connor Greiner from Minisink Valley (Sec. IX-Rockland, Sullivan counties) 12-6 in the round of sixteen. McDougald will face third seeded Raf Lievano from Ward Melville in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

St. Joe’s Ronnie Jones and Ben Parrish were both entered into the tournament at 132-pounds. Jones dropped his first round match to Nick Young from Alexander with a second period pin. Parish met Tyler Schultz from New Milford (CT) in the first round and lost by decision 2-0. Both wrestlers were dropped to the consolation round of sixteen. Parish was eliminated by Lee Mauras from Freeport (VIII) by way of first period pin. Jones was eliminated from the tournament by Kyle Sams from Putnam Valley (I) by major decision.

138: Wheatfield’s Jake DeWolf was a first round winner over Nick Florin from Pine Bush (IX) by major decision 13-5. In the Round of 32 DeWolf met CBA/J-D’s Garrett Bauer and was defeated 11-0. DeWolf then went on to defeat Derrick Magsamen from Pine Bush with a first period pin in the Consolation round of 32. He advanced to wrestle Josh Fernandez from North Rockland (IX) and secured another first period pin. In his third consolation round, DeWolf was defeated by Tyler Sung from New Canaan (CT) by decision 7-2.

145: Wheatfield’s Warren McDougald was a preliminary round winner over Dan Tournoney from New Hartford (III) by decision 8-4. In the Round of 32 McDougald secured a third period pin to defeat Tagan Welch from Southington (CT). In the Round of 16, McDougald met fellow all-state wrestler in defending NYS small school tournament finalist Jack Bokina from Mattituck (XI). Bokina was a winner by decision 6-0. McDougald was dropped to the consolation bracket where he defeated Adam DeMauro from Fulton (III) by a slight decision, 1-0. McDougald will face Steve Gazzillo from Cornwall (IX) in the first round of wrestlebacks tomorrow.

Iroquois’s Cory Day lost his first round match to                 Sachem East’s (XI) Gavin Leath by decision 4-2. Day redeemed himself in the consolation round with two pins in a row to advance to the Round of Sixteen consolation. Day’s first pin came over Jack Ninos from John Jay-E. Fishkill early in the second period. The next was over Logan Duers from Hadley-Luzerne /Lake George (II) early in the third period of the match. He will face Anthony Dushaj from Half Hollow Hills West (XI) in the first consolation round tomorrow.

152: Lancaster’s Ryan Stencel was a first round winner by a 6-0 decision over JD Moore from Levittown Division (VIII). Stencel then met Joe Gannone from Eastport-South Manor (XI) and was a winner by fall to advance to the quarterfinal. Stencel will face off against defending NYS large school tournament finalist Matt Grippi from Fox Lane (I).

Wheatfield’s Josh Thibeault lost a decision in the first round of the 152-pound bracket to Drew Bogdan from Albany Academy (II). In the first round of the consolation Thibeault defeated Anthony Lanza from Msgr. Farrell (CHSAA) by decision 3-1. Pearl River’s (I) Jack Chesman eliminated the Falcon grappler in the following consolation round with an 8-4 decision.

160: St. Joe’s Ty Slaugenhoupt was defeated by major decision 13-4 in the first round by third seeded Chris Barker from Fairport (V). In the wrestlebacks, Slaughenhoupt met Cody York from Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George and was defeated             12-3 to be eliminated from the bracket.

195: Lancaster’s Joe Andreessen was seeded fifth. He cruised into tomorrow’s quarterfinal with a first round pin of Warwick Valley’s (IX) Andrew Wierzbicki and a second pin of Newark Valley’s (Sec. IV-Binghamton region) Alex Woodmansee. Andreessen will face fourth seed Jonathan Loew from Wantagh (VIII)

285: Starpoint’s Anthony Robinson is the third seed and wrestled only once today. H defeated Ismael Mudassar from Levittown Division by decision 3-0. Robinson wrestle Bailey Wood from Walton-Delhi (IV) in the quarterfinal.

Wyoming Seminary is currently in first place in the team standings with 83.5 points. They are followed by Minisink Valley, Wantagh, Danbury (CT), and Eastport-South Manor rounding out the top five. Niagara-Wheatfield is currently in 12th place and Lancaster follows at 14th.
