Lewiston-Porter 45 – Medina 30
The Lancers and Mustangs kicked off Niagara/Orleans ‘super league’ action on Tuesday in each team’s first dual of the spring with the Lancers recording the first dual meet win of the season in WNY. Both L-P and Medina (all three pins for Medina) claimed three head to head victories but the Lancers’ much improved participation and strength in numbers was a difference maker as they collected five forfeits. L-P moved to 1-0 in the Niagara/Orleans standings with the win.
Newfane 69 – Lockport 6
The powerful Panthers got after their neighbors to the south in another Niagara Frontier, Niagara-Orleans crossover dual as part of the 2021 ‘super league.’ Ayden Buttery, Aidan Gillings, Adam Huntington, Andy Lucinksi, Christian Corter, and Charles Larosse all recorded pins for Newfane while Simon Lingle captured a 9-3 decision win in the match.
Niagara Wheatfield 42 – North Tonawanda 19
The defending Section VI Division I champions claimed their first dual win of the season over their NFL rival in North Tonawanda.
Medina 45 – Wilson 30
The Mustangs split two duals on opening night in the Niagara/Orleans league and are already one win better than in 2019-2020.
Wednesday, May 19th
Falconer 78 – Dunkirk 0
The defending NYS champions gained their first CCAA I win of the season and also saw senior captain Joey Pillittieri capture his 100th career victory.
Fredonia 42 – Southwestern 11
Despite four double forfeits, the Hillbillies won eight of thirteen weight classes including all six bouts from 152-285-pounds. While that whole crew could pack a powerful punch, the 160 to 215 lineup of Bryson LeGrano, Hunter Larson, Ceric Kristan, and Matt Lotter may be one of the best units in WNY this season. The Ball brothers back to back at 110 and 118 is going to be tough to beat. Silver Creek senior Larson captured his 100th career win in the Fredonia victory.
Jamestown 48 – Olean 24
The Raiders claimed a road win over the Huskies in their introductory CCAA I dual of the 2021 spring season. Jamestown earned eight wins overall in the dual while all four of Olean’s head to head wins came by way of pin.
Maple Grove 19 – Portville 16
The Dragons won four of seven contested matches and earned an opening night win over the two-time defending CCAA II champions on the road. The Maple Grove/Portville dual has decided the league champion in each of the past two season and perhaps it will again this year should both teams win out the rest of their league schedules.
Salamanca 36 – Randolph 30
Warriors sophomore Konner Spring saved the day for Salamanca with a match-sealing pin at 132-pounds at home against the Cardinals. Salamanca was one of three victorious teams on CCAA II on opening night.
Frewsburg 31 – Franklinville 30 (tie breaker criteria)
Both teams split five wins apiece while every weight was either a forfeit, double forfeit, or pin to set up a 30-30 tie that ultimately landed in the Bears’ favor as they gave up less forfeits than the Panthers.
Thursday, May 20th
Newfane 54 – Lewiston-Porter 22
The Panthers won eight out of thirteen matches at L-P to advance to 2-0 in N/O action. Newfane will be very tough to beat anywhere from 99 to 145-pounds especially with two returning all-state wrestlers in the mix. The matchup of the evening saw L-P’s returning sectional place winner Caden Barrientos hold off the Panthers’ Ayden Buttery for a 4-2 decision win between two of WNY’s rising young stars. Lancers senior captain Ciaran Edwards captured his 100th career victory in the contest as well.
Newfane 65 – Wilson 6
The Panthers doubled up at Lewiston-Porter with a dual victory over the Lakemen. Newfane sits alone atop the N/O standings at 3-0 to end the first week of duals. In the match, Newfane senior Andy Lucinski achieved his 200th career win joining program legend Ryan Needle (240) as the only Panthers in program history to reach that milestone.
Niagara Falls 51 – North Tonawanda 18
New head coach Josh Eagan captured a win over an old NFL rival in his debut dual as head man of the Wolverines. The squads combined to contest a match at every weight except for a double forfeit at 118 and a forfeit to ‘Falls Ja’shad Bumpers at 110-pounds. Out of eleven contested matches, nine ended in a pin including six for NF. With a very strong group of light to lower-middleweights and a core group mixed in the upperweights, Falls is looking like a team ready to make a run for the N/O title.
Starpoint 72 – Lockport 4
The hungry Spartans dispatched of the Lions in their first league match of the season winning all but one weight class. Surely, Starpoint has its sights set on the N/O title in the long run.
