WNY Wrestling Dual Meet Roundup Six

Dual meet results and notes for the week of Monday, January 24th – Friday, January 28th.

Monday, January 24th

#3 Chautauqua Lake 56 – Fredonia 15

The Thunderbirds improve to 4-1 in CCAA I and 13-3 overall this season with only one non-league dual remaining. CL collected six wins in the seven contested matches including four pins and two majors.

Akron 60 – St. Mary’s 18

The Tigers captured their fifth win of the season in a non-league matchup over the visiting Lancers. Akron earned ten wins overall in the dual with seven pins. St. Mary’s’ Trevor Sheehan, who became the program’s all-time wins leader last week, captured his 100th career victory and in doing so became the first ever 100-match winner in Lancers program history.

Fredonia 42 – #10 Gowanda/Cattaraugus-Little Valley 24

Fredonia gets its second CCAA I win of the season while recognizing junior Lucas Hoffman for achieving the 100 career victories milestone in the dual.

Tuesday, January 25th

HM St. Francis 60 – Gow School 9

The Red Raiders wrapped up the team’s first outright Msgr. Martin title since 2018-2019 with a perfect 4-0 league record this season. St. Francis will host the 56th Annual Msgr. Martin All-Catholic Championships on Sunday, February 6th.

#3 Chautauqua Lake 59 – #6 Portville 6

The T’Birds paid a visit to Portville for a ranked CCAA crossover match. CL won nine of the ten contested bouts while accepting two forfeits to finish the 2021-2022 season with a 14-3 overall dual record. Look for Chautauqua Lake to advance a number of athletes to the sectional championships and perhaps even a few to NYS individual championships. Portville’s Dakota Mascho was the lone winner for the Panthers on Tuesday as he prepares for a final run at a NYS title.

#1 Lancaster 49 – #10 Jamestown 19

A number of rare forfeits plagued the Red Raiders on Tuesday against the area’s top large school team, however four head to head winners in nine matches added two pins, a technical fall, and a decision for Jamestown. Lancaster captured three pins, a major, and a heavyweight OT thriller at 285 with Tommy Carlsen earning the 5-3 victory. A win in Wednesday’s home showdown against #8 Hamburg would secure the outright ECIC I title for the Legends.

#5 Iroquois 51 – Sweet Home 22

The Chiefs improved to 4-1 overall in ECIC II with a league finale showdown at Starpoint coming up Wednesday. With a 12-12 tie after four weights, Iroquois collected three forfeits, three pins, and a decision consecutively to take a commanding 51-12 lead. Chiefs senior Ryan Sweeney picked up a pin for his 150th career victory and in front of the home crowd.

HM Williamsville North/East 52 – Williamsville South 18

The Spartans come out on top in an inner-district, ECIC crossover showdown. North won five of nine contested bouts with three pins. WN visits the Amherst Jungle on Friday for another in-town rivalry match against the #6 Tigers.

Wednesday, January 26th

#1 Lancaster 47 – #8 Hamburg 29

The Legends finish the 2021-2022 season alone atop the ECIC I standings with a perfect 7-0 record for the program’s 25th league title. Lancaster received the only forfeit of the dual but matched up with the solid Bulldogs squad at six head to head wins each. The difference maker for Lancaster was five pins and one tech fall compared to Hamburg’s three pins and one tech fall. The league title is the first for second year head coach Clint Schaefer. Hamburg finishes the season with a 4-3 record in the very tough ECIC I division and 13-7 overall.

#2 Starpoint 49 – #5 Iroquois 15

The Spartans achieved their day one mission of capturing the division title with a convincing win over the visiting Chiefs in Mapleton in a final tune up before the state duals. Starpoint claimed seven wins out of nine head to head matches with four pins including big wins by Gage LaPlante to set the tone in the beginning of the match and Griffin LaPlante to end it. The Spartans finish the 2021-2022 campaign at 6-0 in league duals for the team’s first ECIC title since the 2016-2017 season, only the seventh ever league title in program history. The Chiefs finish up the league slate with a 4-2 record in ECIC II.

#4 Pioneer 51 – Eden 15

The Panthers capped off an 8th straight undefeated season in ECIC III duals while extending the team’s league unbeaten streak to eight years and 57 matches. After tragedy struck the Pioneer community last August, the 2021-2022 Panthers battled more than just opponents from other teams this season, showing tremendous resolve in the face of great loss. Credit to head coach Chris Edwards, the wrestling staff, and the entire Pioneer Wrestling community for a job well done this year. Pioneer ends the dual meet slate 6-0 in ECIC III and 11-2 overall.

#5 Frontier 35 – #9 Orchard Park 31

NO FORFEITS. Two of ECIC I’s steadily rising powers combined for a full slate of matches in Wednesday’s rivalry showdown. Frontier edged OP in head to head wins, seven to six, but matched with four pins apiece. Frontier also collected two decisions to Orchard Park’s one, while only two matches ended in additional team points that weren’t pins, courtesy of the Falcons’ Sal Affronte by tech fall (5 team points) and the Quakers’ Jackson Berchtold by major decision (4). Frontier finishes the 2021-2022 ECIC I slate at 5-2 which guarantees at least a tie for the runner-up position (depending on the outcome of Clarence vs. Williamsville North/East next week) for the first time in quite some years. Battle-tested OP finishes with a 3-4 record in the league but 11-9 overall after another season of improvement

#6 Amherst 56 – Williamsville South 16

The Main Street classic was all Amherst this time as the Tigers claimed wins at ten of thirteen weights to secure sole possession of second place in ECIC II this season with a 5-1 league record. Amherst will have a number of athletes looking to make some noise in the postseason after another fine regular season by Coach Bauer and staff.

#7 Southwestern 45 – #8 Randolph 21

A ranked CCAA crossover match was the Trojans’ first dual outside of the league this season. SW defended their place in the small school rankings behind seven wins in ten head to head matches and two forfeits. While we know about some of the returning stars for Southwestern, don’t look past a few Randolph Cardinals looking to make some noise in the postseason too. The Cardinals end the dual season at home next week with a home showdown against #9 Maple Grove with the second spot in CCAA II and bragging rights on the line.

#3 Niagara Falls 60 – North Tonawanda 9

NO FORFEITS. Falls gets back to action with a big win over the ‘Jacks to improve to 6-0 in the NFL and 12-1 overall. The Wolverines dominated with eleven wins in all thirteen head to head matchups including eight pins. Falls hosts archrival Wheatfield on Friday with the Niagara Cup and the NFL title on the line (again). NT finishes the league slate with a 5-2 conference record and in sole possession of 3rd place in the league this season.

#4 Niagara Wheatfield 72 – CSAT 6

The Falcons improved to 6-0 in the NFL and will pay a visit to Niagara Falls with the outright league championship on the line on Friday night. The Wolverines won their first meeting of the season, 35-24, in the bronze match in the Section VI Division I Dual Meet Championships on January 8th.

#10 Jamestown 45 – West Seneca/Depew 30

The surprising Red Raiders conclude the ECIC I slate at 2-5, however Jamestown held their own against some excellent teams in the league this season and have appeared in the ranking since their opening week dual win. Hopefully, things continue to go well for Jamestown leading into the 2022-2023 season.

Springville 38 – Lake Shore 30

The Griffins capped off the 2021-2022 season with an exciting league finale victory at home against the Eagles. With both teams entering the dual at 4-1 in ECIC III, the final night of league action provided an exciting finish between two rebuilding programs for the runner-up position in the division. SGI won five of the eight head to head bouts including three pins. The squads also combined for a handful of exhibitions in addition to the varsity dual. Springville finishes 5-1 in the league and 11-4 overall while the Eagles land in the third spot at 4-2 overall. Give credit to both SGI head coach Mark Vogel and Lake Shore head coach Bill Sills for the work they are doing at their respective schools, and especially to Lake Shore for rebounding after a tough spring 2021 outing.

Grand Island 41 – Lockport 27

The Vikings’ win puts the team just into the top five of the final NFL standings at 3-4 overall. An exciting league slate comes to a close that saw some very competitive matches from the 2nd place through 5th place teams. Hopefully, these results are an encouraging sign of good things to come across the NFL member squads.

Kenmore 45 – Lewiston-Porter 20

New head coach Dave Wilcox’s squad finishes a solid 4-3 in the NFL with some really nice close wins on the resume this season back in the league. Keep in mind the combined West/East DevilDogs competed the spring 2021 season amongst all-Erie County teams.

Thursday, January 27th 

Wilson 53 – Akron 24

The Lakemen finish out the 2021-2022 season with the final win in the N-O calendar. Wilson finishes the dual season with at 3-2 in the league and 9-4 overall.

Bolivar-Richburg (V) 42 – #6 Portville 21

The Panthers closed out their dual meet calendar with a home loss to the very tough Wolverines in a matchup of former Expressway Conference rivals. After locking up the CCAA II title last week Portville finishes out the 2021-2022 season at 14-4 overall.

Attica/Batavia (V) 47 – #7 Clarence 21

The Red Devils paid a visit to the Blue Devils in an inter-sectional showdown. After suffering from a few forfeits in recent weeks, Clarence put out a wrestler at all but one weight, including sophomore heavyweight Bryce Hawes who has been impressive in only wrestling twenty-one matches this season, some of which were against the area’s top upperclassmen. Four Red Devils secured wins against the very quality A/B team with three coming by way of pin.

#7 Southwestern 54 – #9 Maple Grove 21

The Trojans secured their second ranked win in as many nights against a quality Dragons squad. SW entered a wrestler at all but one weight and earned seven pins in all seven of its head to head wins. Trojans senior Dante Hoose collected his 100th career victory in the contest as well. Southwestern finishes the season 6-2 overall in duals.

Friday, January 28th

#3 Niagara Falls 38 – #4 Niagara Wheatfield 12

Falls claimed the outright Niagara Frontier League title for the second time in three years (not counting the spring 2021 ‘super league’) with a home win against the Falcons and in doing so retained possession of the Niagara Cup for the third straight year. The extremely low scoring affair featured one (1) single forfeit in favor of NW in the very last bout with the match already far out of reach. NF’s Thomas Crumpler earned the only (1) pin of the entire dual. Starting at 145-pounds, Mike Syposs got the Wolverines started off with a huge decision result. After five weights Falls led only 19-0 winning two decisions, two majors, and one tech. Wheatfield recovered wins at 215 and 285, but Crumpler’s pin at 102 kicked off five more wins in a row for Falls, all of which being big time head to heads that will have postseason implications. The Wolverines complete the league slate 7-0 for the team’s third straight unbeaten ‘league season’ (10-0 in spring 2021 ‘super league,’ 7-0 in 2019-2020 NFL) and 13-1 overall. NW finishes 6-1 in the conference and 15-5 overall.

HM Williamsville North/East 34 – #6 Amherst 24

The Spartans topped in town rival Amherst on Friday for their second win along Main Street this week. North pulled even now at 7-7 overall with a big opportunity to finish over .500 on the season next week when they host #7 Clarence on Tuesday in the final ECIC I match of the 2021-2022 season. Against Amherst, North’s Zach Dellinger bumped a weight to earn a crucial win over one of the Tigers’ top athletes at 126-pounds. North won eight bouts to Amherst’s five but the teams split with three pins apiece. Five Spartans gutted out decision victories (with one major) compared to two decisions in favor of the Tigers suggesting a very evenly matched dual between the Town’s top two squads.
