WNY Wrestling Dual Meet Roundup: Week Three

Monday, December 20th

#7 Medina 64 – Charter School for Applied Technologies 6

The freshly ranked Mustangs collected a big non-league win over the Niagara Frontier League’s visiting Eagles.

Springville 48 – Franklinville 6

The Griffins improved to 7-0 on the season with a non-league win in Franklinville. At 3-0 in ECIC III, Springville is on top of the league standings at the Christmas break.

Tuesday, December 21st

#1 Newfane 45 – St. Francis 27

The 29th edition of WNY’s longest running non-league, annual rivalry match was wrestled in Athol Springs on Tuesday. The Panthers captured their third straight win in the series to improve to 11-1 on the season. Newfane collected five pins in the contest.

Port Allegany (PA) 40 – #2 Falconer 25

The Golden Falcons again hosted a cross-border dual with a Keystone State squad. Falconer fielded a full lineup including 102-pounds but the Gators won eight out of twelve contested bouts. Falconer winners collected two pins, a tech fall, a forfeit, and a decision in the loss.

#7 Amherst 36 – St. Joe’s 26

The Tigers made the short drive down Main St. and Kenmore Ave. to continue their local rivalry. Amherst sent a wrestler out at all but one weight (double forfeit at 110) however the Marauders won six head to head matches to the Tigers’ four. St. Joe’s’ Jefferson Long was an impressive winner by major decision over Amherst’s Giovanni Russo, 9-1.

#8 Randolph 54 – Fredonia 21

The Cardinals finally wrestled their first dual of the season and collected a win in a CCAA crossover match. Randolph received forfeits at most weights, but the teams split in head to head duals, 3-3. The Cardinals (Randolph’s 2021-2022 BEDS number is 189) fielded a wrestler in all but one weight class in the win.

Wilson 37 – Lyndonville (V) 33

The Lakemen improved to 6-3 overall this season with an inter-section win over the Tigers.

Lockport 48 – Lewiston-Porter 21

The Lions captured their first win of the season in an NFL matchup with the Lancers. Lewiston’s Edwards sisters both claimed wins in the dual.

Wednesday, December 22nd

#1 Niagara Falls 78 – CSAT 0

The Wolverines are a perfect 3-0 in the league and 8-0 overall at the break.

#1 Newfane 45 – Albion 27

The Panthers improved to 2-0 in the N-O and 12-1 overall heading into the break. Newfane won six out of nine contested matches in the dual however there were four forfeits in the evening. Wrestlers from each squad may meet again next week at the annual Akron Holiday tournament.

#2 Lancaster 64 – West Seneca/Depew 10

The Legends improved to 3-0 in ECIC I and 7-1 overall. Lancaster, Clarence, and Hamburg are all 3-0 in the league at the break.

#2 Falconer 62 – Olean/Allegany-Limestone 9

The Golden Falcons won 11 of 13 weights with five pins and four forfeits collected. Falconer is tied with Chautauqua Lake atop the CCAA I standings at 3-0.

#3 Starpoint 65 – St. Francis 9

The Spartans earned wins in 11 of the 13 weights to cruise to the victory and keep the momentum going which they will need to take with them to the brutal Windsor Christmas Tournament this week. Starpoint is 10-3 overall at the break. The Raiders’ Liam Edwards is now 13-1 with eleven pins this season.

#3 Chautauqua Lake 42 – Gowanda/Cattaraugus-Little Valley 18

The powerful Thunderbirds improved to 3-0 in CCAA I to keep pace with Falconer, but the combined Gowanda team had another strong showing in numbers (only one true forfeit). All six of CL’s head to head wins were by pin. Also, the dual featured a rare all-female match as Gowanda’s Ke’ya Stevens was a winner by decision in the varsity 126-pound match.

#4 Niagara Wheatfield 57 – Lockport 12

NW won 10 of 13 weights to improve to 3-0 in the Niagara Frontier League, keeping pace with Falls. It’s looking more and more likely that the Niagara Cup in January will determine the NFL champion…again. If they stay together, the NW lineup from 118 to 145-pounds will be extremely difficult to beat.

#4 Pioneer 59 – Maryvale 3

Eight of the Panthers’ ten wins in this dual were by pin as Pioneer improved to 2-0 in ECIC III and 6-2 overall this season.

#5 Clarence 48 – #6 Frontier 24

The Red Devils are 3-0 against the Falcons this year and now 3-0 in ECIC I at the break. Frontier was without a few notable starters, however Clarence has a quality group from 126 to 160-pounds. Keep an eye on both squads in the upcoming Section VI Dual Meet Championships.

#6 Portville 40 – #8 Randolph 30

The Panthers improved to 3-0 in CCAA II and now hold a comfortable lead over the rest of the pack. Portville has taken down both of the top two challengers in the league which puts them firmly in the driver seat for the division crown. Portville claimed seven wins to Randolph’s six in the dual as well as six of eight head to heads while conceding two forfeits. The Panthers remain unbeaten at 8-0 as they prepare to compete in the sectional dual championships for the first time soon.

#8 Hamburg 41 – #10 Jamestown 28

The Bulldogs made the tough weeknight trip to visit the resurgent Red Raiders but left with another league win to improve to 3-0 in ECIC I at the break. Both teams split with five head to head wins each, however four pins for Hamburg and only two for Jamestown (as well as two forfeits for Hamburg and only one for Jamestown) gave the Bulldogs critical bonus team points. Hamburg is 12-4 overall at the break.

Williamsville North/East 45 – #9 Orchard Park 26

NO FORFEITS. The Spartans earned a crucial ECIC I victory over the Quakers to help their own case for entry to the Section VI Duals. North earned eight wins in the dual with seven pins compared to OP’s five wins and three pins. After OP won the first bout, North rattled off four straight pins from 102 to 126 to take the lead and never look back. ECIC I is fireworks every single night.

#5 Iroquois 57 – East Aurora 18

The Chiefs improved to 2-0 in ECIC II at the break with a big win against their Route 400 neighbors, looking to gain some momentum leading up to the sectional duals. Iroquois collected three forfeits in the match and won seven of ten head to heads, six by pin. Without a ton of depth, head coach Jeff Michel’s Blue Devils continue to go out and do battle within their league with some of Section VI’s top ranked teams. EA is the only team in ECIC II to have wrestled #3 Starpoint, #5 Iroquois, and #7 Amherst all before Christmas. Their schedule presents some winnable league duals in the second half of the season.

Wilson 42 – #7 Medina 30

The Lakemen earned a critical Niagara-Orleans win to stay alive in the top half of the league table. Every match in this dual was either a pin or forfeit. While Wilson conceded three forfeits in the lower weights, they earned six pins and one forfeit to claim seven, 6-point victories compared to Medina’s five, 6-point victories. The Mustangs won all their matches from 102 to 138 while Wilson won their’s from 145 to 285. Wilson is 7-3 at the break while Medina suffered its first loss of the season.

North Tonawanda 54 – Lewiston-Porter 24

NT improved to 2-1 in the NFL and are firmly in the 3-spot in the league standings at the break.

Kenmore 45 – Grand Island 27

The DevilDogs earned a nice team win to get into the NFL win column while avenging a loss to the Vikings from the first week of the season. Kenmore collected eight wins to GI’s four, including seven, 6-point victories (pins or forfeits). After the break, Kenmore and NT meet for their NFL dual which could and should be a big match to let each of these programs know how they stand currently. NT won their first meeting from the first week of the season, 42-30.

Lake Shore 54 – Lackawanna 24

The Eagles and Steelers have shown tremendous resolve in getting their teams back on track after a frustrating spring 2021 season. Lake Shore put a complete lineup out, sending a wrestler at all thirteen weights while Lackawanna was able to fill ten this time. The Steelers collected three pins from 160 to 215, but Lake Shore’s eight straight pins or forfeits from 285 to 145 buried Lackawanna. All ten head to heads ended in pins. Check out Lake Shore at 2-0 in ECIC III at the break. Lackawanna (2-3) has already wrestled five of its six league duals.

Eden 38 – Tonawanda 24

Maple Grove 63 – Frewsburg 0

The Dragons are 2-1 in CCAA II and 3-1 overall at the break.
