WNY Wrestling Round-Up: Week 4

Dual results for the week of Tuesday, December 18th – Friday, December 21st 2018.

Tuesday, 12/18/2018

Falconer 57 – Chautauqua Lake 30

The #8 Thunderbirds won four out of five matches between 99 and 126-pounds but the #1 Golden Falcons earned six pins and three forfeits in sealing their third CCAA Div. I win of the season. Hunter Teboe and Jimmy Kramer won two key matches for Falconer while Hunter Lewis and Collin Beichner lost but held their opponents to three team-point decisions where Chautauqua Lake was hoping for more. Section VI champion Brendon Ramsey and place winner Derek Ecklund were out of the Lake lineup.

Clarence 45 – Frontier 31

The WNY #3 Red Devils defeated their ECIC I rival to move to 3-0 in league and 14-1 on the season. Clarence won the pin battle seven to two and won eight matches to Frontier’s seven. Every weight except for 220-pounds was wrestled as Clarence yielded the night’s only forfeit.

Tonawanda 39 – East Aurora 37

The #7 Warriors pulled off a huge ECIC III win over the #10 Blue Devils. Both squads entered the dual with 2-0 league marks looking to put themselves in command of the league title race. East Aurora falls to 2-1 in the league and will need help from other league rivals to take down the Warriors and win out if there’s any hope left for the league title.

Newfane 61 – Akron 24

Head coach Matt Lingle and the #5 Panthers handled the Tigers for their fourth Niagara-Orleans win of the season pushing the Panther’s league unbeaten streak to 29 straight wins. With a win at Albion on Wednesday, January 9th the Panthers would achieve their 6th straight N-O title. Newfane is 4-0 in league and 11-7 overall.

Lancaster 43 – Orchard Park 30

The #4 Legends fended off the Quakers on Wednesday to remain unbeaten at 3-0 in ECIC I. Each end of the lineup traded blows as OP won all four bouts between 182 and 285 while Lancaster won all four from 99 to 120-pounds. The pin battle was even at four apiece however Lancaster won nine bouts to the Quaker’s five. Orchard Park yielded the dual’s only forfeit at 106-pounds. Next for Lancaster is a home league dual against the full lineup of Frontier on January 2nd.

Hamburg 56 – Williamsville North/East 27

Coming off a 5th place team finish at ECIC’s the #8 Bulldogs moved to 3-0 in ECIC I and 13-3 overall with a win against the Spartans on Wednesday, keeping pace with Clarence and Lancaster in the league. Once again, Hamburg is quietly putting together another sound season. The Bulldogs won ten out of fifteen bouts on Wednesday but conceded one forfeit at 113-pounds. They won six straight bouts (five by pin) between 120 and 152-pounds including an overtime pin by Dylan Collins over North’s Mike Catanzaro. North entered a full lineup in the dual. Next up for Hamburg is home dual against co-league leader #3 Clarence on Wednesday, January 9th.

Iroquois 78 – Lake Shore 6

Ranked ECIC II squads faced off in Elma on senior night for the Chiefs. #3 Iroquois pulled out a dominating win against the #6 Eagles. Seven Chiefs earned pins and Lake Shore yielded five forfeits. Iroquois moves to 2-0 in the league and 10-1 overall.

St. Joe’s 43 – Fairport (V) 39 The Marauders won six head to head bouts against the Red Raider’s five. Each squad received two forfeits.

Niagara Falls 62 – Kenmore 18 #2 Falls now 4-0 NFL, 14-0 overall

Niagara-Wheatfield 81 – Lockport 0 #1 Wheatfield now 4-0 NFL, 7-1 overall. Falcons are #15 in the first NYSSWA large school poll.

Grand Island 78 – CSAT 3 #5 GI moves to 3-1 NFL, 11-6 overall

Lancaster 36 – Grand Island 35

The #4 Legends held off the #5 Vikings in an exciting down to the wire dual at home in a rematch of last year’s Section VI Div. I Dual Meet Championship final. Lancaster didn’t lead at any point until the last bout. With the team down 33-35 freshman Will Sundell scored a late takedown at 126-pounds and held on to win 7-5 ultimately sealing the dual victory for Lancaster. The Legends go into the Christmas break 3-0 in ECIC I and 8-2 overall.

Maple Grove 48 – Randolph 38

The Red Dragons moved solely into first place in CCAA Div. II following a win over the league rival Cardinals. Maple Grove is now 3-0 in the league after snapping Randolph’s twenty match league win streak putting the Cardinals’ hopes for a fourth consecutive league title in jeopardy.

Franklinville 42 – Frewsburg 36

John Tinelli was the savior for the Panthers in a dual that was tied 36-36 going into the final bout. It was Franklinville’s second CCAA Div. II win of the season. Hats off to both squads for an exciting league match.

Maryvale 48 – Springville 28

The Flyers defeated the Griffins to stay competitive in the ECIC III race moving to 3-0 in the league.

Canisius 48 – Kenmore 37

The Crusaders kept their unbeaten season alive with their seventh win over a public school this year.

St. Francis 53 – Alexander (V) 27

The #10 Red Raiders traveled into Genesee County and picked up a win over the Trojans.

Lyndonville 63 – CSAT 18

Friday, 12/21/2018

Starpoint 43 – Amherst 34

The #9 Spartans paid a visit to the Jungle at #7 Amherst for an ECIC II showdown. The Spartans jumped out to an enormous lead 34-0 starting at 106-pounds. They won the evenings’ first six bouts and Amherst responded winning the next five thereafter. Battling the ‘teeth’ of Amherst’s lineup, head coach Steve Hart’s Spartans held the Tigers to a tech, major decision, and decision while also earning an overtime win at 182-pounds to set up 99-pound standout Gage LaPlante for the match sealing pin back at 99-pounds. Starpoint is on top of the ECIC II standings at 4-0 in the league, 11-5 overall.

Iroquois 62 – Sweet Home 18

The #3 Chiefs earned seven pins and three forfeits for their third league win of the season. Iroquois heads into the break 3-0 in league, 11-1 overall.

Brookville Area HS (PA) 53 – Falconer 13

WNY’s #1 small school faced off with the Blue Raiders at Clarion University on Friday before the Golden Eagles’ division one match against Pittsburgh. Brookville won eleven of the fourteen bouts (no 99-pound class in PA). Hunter Teboe, Jimmy Kramer, and Robbie Penhollow were the lone Golden Falcon winners on the evening. Falconer remains 3-0 in CCAA Div. I and 12-1 overall at the break. NYSSWA has Falconer at #4 in the NYS small school poll.

Pioneer 63 – Depew/Cleveland Hill 18

The #2 Panthers earned their second ECIC II win of the season to move to 2-0 in league and 8-1 overall. Pioneer is #7 in the current NYSSWA small school poll and will have their work cut out for them immediately after the new year with league rivals Starpoint, Iroquois, and Lake Shore all within seven days of one another.

West Seneca West 39 – Canisius 35

The Indians handed the Crusaders their first loss of the season in a dual that come down to the last bout. With the team down 33-35 going into the 145-pound bout, Jacob Mancuso earned a pin to seal the win for the Indians.
