Wednesday, January 22nd
The anticipated showdown for the CCAA I title was all in favor of the Golden Falcons who won nine weights to Fredonia’s six and captured three pins to the Hillbillies’ one. Fredonia was also forced to concede two costly forfeits in the dual as well. Mack Mikula and John Kozlowski captured decisive wins at 160 and 170 for Falconer while Austin Chase, Joey Pillittieri, and Bryce Baglia secured pins for new #1 state ranked Golden Falcons (by NYWN.com). Golden Falcons held Hillbillies to three decisions in the four upper weights of their lineup guaranteeing victory with matches still left on the board. Returning sectional champion Ceric Kristan was impressive wrestling up a weight class against a strong Falconer opponent. Hunter Larson captured Fredonia’s only pin of the dual. With the win, head coach Drew Wilcox and the Golden Falcons finish the league schedule again unbeaten at 6-0 and conclude the decade with a 53-1 record against CCAA I foes, capturing the team’s ninth straight league title. Falconer sits at 26-1 overall with the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships coming up next weekend.
HM Grand Island 37 – #1 Niagara Wheatfield 36 (tie breaking criteria)
The Vikings upset the Section VI champions in Sanborn on Wednesday night to improve to 6-0 in NFL action. The win over the league rival Falcons was the dual meet highlight of the season so far Grand Island, who improved to 13-9 overall. The Vikings started the dual off winning seven of their eight match victories between 160 and 99-pounds. Brian Bielec earned a huge technical fall at 160 followed by a Casey Dummitt major decision at 170. Returning state place winner Adam Daghestani was back in the lineup for the first time since suffering an injury on January 10th at Eastern States and collected a forfeit. From 195 to 285 Caleb Messing, Gavin Larsen, and Blake Bielec collected two pins a decision going into the lower weights. Nick Massaro captured another important win at 99-pounds with a 3-2 decision win. Wheatfield would earn wins from 106 to 120 and 132 to 145, collecting two forfeits in the process. However, with eight bout wins to seven for NW, the tie breaker criteria favored the Vikings, who will square off with Niagara Falls for the NFL title. Wheatfield (4-2 NFL, 14-5 overall) will still participate in the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships, but was officially eliminated from any hope of splitting the league title. In the dual, Justin McDougald passed Angelo Malvestuto as the Falcons’ all-time wins leader with his 223rd career victory.
The Panthers survived the Spartans at home to improve to 6-0 in ECIC II and 50-0 against league opponents in the last seven seasons. Pioneer (21-6 overall) earned eight wins to Starpoint’s seven and three pins to two. Freshman lightweight Xander Kirsch was the hero of the night for Pioneer as he avenged a loss from the ECIC tournament semifinals with a come from behind pin at 99-pounds against the Spartans’ Gage LaPlante. With the win, the Panthers secured at least a share of the ECIC II title and will have a chance to outright win it next week when they host Lake Shore. A victory over the Eagles would result in Pioneer’s seventh straight league title. Pioneer coach Chris Edwards also earned his 200th career victory as head coach of the Panthers with the win over Starpoint.
The Legends improved to 6-0 in ECIC I and 17-1 overall with a convincing win over a strong Falcons team. Lancaster collected eight wins including two rare forfeits while earning pins in all six of their head to head victories. Frontier was unable to gain significant ground in the team scoring as the Falcons only collected two pins in the contest. Lancaster freshman Tom Carlsen earned a pin over a quality opponent at 285 while Frontier’s Konrad Kryszton defeated Dam Empfield to tie their season series at one win apiece. Frontier visits Hamburg next week for a local rivalry while Lancaster hosts Clarence next week with the league title on the line…
The Red Devils took down their second top five team in a week to improve to 6-0 in ECIC I and 17-4 overall this season. After missing David Van Horn and Ian Howell in last week’s win over Frontier, the pair earned a solid decision win and pin, respectively, in the win over the Bulldogs. Clarence won nine matches to six, pinning in five of them. Aiden Rabideau had the tough task of wrestling Devin Collins for the second time in five days as he won a critical 4-1 decision in Wednesday’s dual. For the fourth straight year the regular season ECIC I Border War finale in Lancaster next week will determine the league champion.
#2 Iroquois 63 – Eden 15
The solid Chiefs squad is now one league dual meet win away from the outright ECIC III title. Iroquois collected a handful of forfeits and four head to head wins versus three for Eden. Giovanni Schifano was a solid 8-3 winner over the Chiefs’ Tyler Barry at 160-pounds as the rivalry looks to be heating up as the post-season approaches. Iroquois is now 5-0 in ECIC III and 24-3 overall.
#3 Newfane 60 – St. Francis 16
The Panthers and Red Raiders met for their annual non-league dual for the twenty-seventh consecutive season. After a close 40-33 loss in last year’s meeting, the Panthers cruised with ten wins and ten pins in the 2020 edition. Besides a double forfeit at 220, every other weight was fully contested with five additional exhibitions as well. The Niagara-Orleans League champions improved to 22-4 overall with the win.
#8 Southwestern 61 – Randolph 24
The Trojans won eleven of the fifteen weight classes for the team’s eighth win of the season. With more duals on the schedule this season than last, Southwestern has shown a lot of improvement as a dual team while challenging very good rivals in CCAA I this year. A handful of Trojans may be primed to make some noise in the upcoming post-season.
#9 Orchard Park 75 – West Seneca 12
The Quakers improved to 2-3 in the brutal ECIC I and 12-9 overall on the season.
HM Amherst 59 – Alden/Depew 25
Amherst improved to 4-2 in ECIC II with a win over a Bulldogs team that has improved over the course of the season. The Tigers entered a full lineup and collected five forfeits, however A/D wrestled well in the ten head to heads earning four wins while Amherst collected six.
Lackawanna 54 – Springville 33
The Steelers and Griffins battled it out for second place in the current ECIC III standings. While both still have one league dual remaining on the schedule, the improvement over the course of the year for both of these teams has to be recognized.
Williamsville South 54 – Sweet Home 27
South improved to 2-4 in ECIC II and 7-5 overall with a win over local rival Sweet Home. The Billies won six of the eight head to head bouts and collected three more forfeits in the victory. Both squads have one league dual left on their schedules.
North Tonawanda 39 – Lockport 31
The Lumberjacks nipped the Lions in an NFL battle between two programs that are the rise. While NT has won ten or more matches in each of the past two seasons, the Lions, badly in need of a rebound, have shown significant improvement in participation and have gotten better as the season has progressed. A quality dual between rehabing programs in the NFL is nothing but good news for these teams and the other member schools. Twelve matches were contested in this match compared to only three forfeits, two of which were accepted by Lockport. NT won eight head to head bouts pinning in three of them. The dual was highlighted by individual bouts between Lockport’s Kevin Daskavitz and NT’s Camerin Holmes where Daskavitz was a 5-4 winner, and NT’s Chris Kinney over Lockport’s Stefaan Fearon by a 1-0 margin at 285. The ‘Jacks improved to 2-3 in the NFL and 11-7 overall this season.
Kenmore 62 – CSAT 13
Kenmore improved to 2-3 in the NFL and entered a wrestler at every weight, sans a 99-pound double forfeit, and ascended to the ten win threshold this season, the fifth team in the NFL to do so in 2019-2020.
Franklinville 57 – Gowanda 22
The Panthers won their second dual in two nights in a three night stretch of matches in a CCAA crossover dual. Franklinville achieved ten wins this season with the victory over Gowanda and again showed strong numbers as a wrestler was entered in every weight but two (one being a double forfeit).
Maple Grove 54 – Dunkirk 18
The Red Dragons improved to 7-4 overall this season with a CCAA crossover dual. After a bad 2018-2019 season, credit to Dunkirk for taking a step in the right direction this season.
St. Mary’s 54 – Wilson 10
The Lancers captured a victory over the Lakemen on senior night. St. Mary’s earned seven head to head victories in the win as they prepare for the tough CHSAA Duals this weekend.
Tonawanda 46 – Maryvale 45
The Warriors edged the Flyers in the last bout of the match to improve to 2-2 in ECIC III.
Olean 39 – Coudersport, PA 21
The Huskies made the thirty five mile trip to Coudersport for a dual between the two state bordering towns. Without 99-pounds, Olean won seven matches to the Falcons’ four, pinning in six of them.
Holley/Kendall (V) 48 – Barker/Royalton-Hartland 34
Thursday, January 23rd
#7 Chautauqua Lake 42 – Franklinville 40
A scrappy Panthers squad pushed the Thunderbirds in their final CCAA I dual of the season. Ultimately, CL edged Franklinville with eight wins to seven, collecting four pins, two forfeits, and two critical decision wins. Franklinville collected three pins and three forfeits as well as a big major decision by Ethan Coleman at 106-pounds over CL’s Martin Ohlsson. In recent weeks Coleman has emerged as a possible wrestler to make some noise in the post-season. While the teams were perfectly even in terms of six point matches (pins and forfeits), decisions by Jayden Malecki and Brendon Rowe were the difference makers for ‘C-Lake’ who improved to 3-2 in the league with one match to go.
North Tonawanda 66 – Tonawanda 21
A night after an important Niagara Frontier League win, the Lumberjacks earned an important program win over their southern neighbor in the annual ‘T-NT’ Battle for the Belt rivalry. It was the second straight win for NT in the series. The ‘Jacks claimed wins in eleven weight classes, six of which were head to head and all by pin. NT’s Camerin Holmes was the big winner of the night with a pin over Tonawanda’s returning Section VI champion at 182-pounds. North Tonawanda improved to 12-7 overall with the win.
Kenmore 60 – Lockport 28
The East/West ‘Devil Dogs’ are an even 3-3 in NFL action after a solid win over the Lions. Kenmore captured ten wins while giving up only two head to head losses and pinned in four straight weights from 145 to 170-pounds. Kenmore hosts its own Invitational this weekend before visiting North Tonawanda for an NFL match that should be crucial for either team as an indicator of where each of these programs are at in the building process.
#4 Niagara Falls 60 – Lewiston-Porter 13
The Wolverines improved to 6-0 in NFL duals setting up a league title showdown at Grand Island next week. Caden Barrientos was an overtime winner by a 7-4 decision over Falls’ Jaden Crumpler in the match of the night.
Falconer (B) 60 – Salamanca 24
The Golden Falcons sent a mixed crew of junior varsity and wrestlers that are used commonly in the varsity lineup to Salamanca on Thursday. Falconer entered a wrestler at every weight except two and collected ten wins in the contest. The win does count toward Falconer’s overall season dual record, which sits at 27-1 at week’s end.
Lyndonville (V) 48 – Wilson 31
