Wrestling Round Up: Week 1

Dual meet results for the week of Monday, 11/26 – Thursday, 11/29/18

Tuesday, 11/27

Amherst 63 – Depew/Cleveland Hill 21

Nine Tigers won bouts in an ECIC II rivalry match including brothers Antoine and Lenox Walker who returned to Amherst this offseason.

Fredonia 84 – Barker/Royalton-Hartland 0

The Hillbillies hosted non-league Barker/Roy-Hart on a day when most of the Chautauqua and Cattaraugus schools had weather-related issues. Fredonia proved it belongs in the small school conversation with a crushing win in which 8 ‘Billies earned pins. Former two-time Section VI champion Dalton Gardner returned to action after missing the second half of last season with an injury.

Wednesday, 11/28

Akron 49 – Albion 36

The Tigers got off on the right foot in Niagara-Orleans League action with a win over rival Albion. Perhaps the best part of the night was the low number of forfeits (two from Albion, one by Akron) which is hopefully a sign of good things to come for these teams and small schools in general. Keep in mind both of these teams competed at the Section VI Duals last season.

Niagara Falls 90 – Charter School for Applied Technologies 0

The powerful Wolverines earned an NFL win over the Eagles who are now only in the team’s sophomore year.

Lewiston-Porter 48 – Lockport 36

The Lancers earned a big NFL win over rival Lockport on opening night. Defending Section VI place winner Josh Rolon was absent from the Lions’ lineup.

Newfane 75 – Medina 12

New head coach Matt Lingle and his Panthers picked up where the 2017-2018 squad left off with a big win over N-O rival Medina. The Panthers fielded a full lineup and featured former Lockport wrestler Josh Gill at 120-pounds. Every bout ended in a fall or forfeit except for one.

Niagara Wheatfield 76 – North Tonawanda 12

The Falcons proved why they’re possibly Section VI’s strongest program (again) by not only fielding a full varsity squad (again) but also an entire 15-man junior varsity squad (again) against the ‘Jacks. Wheatfield moves to 1-0 in NFL action on opening night.

Starpoint 57 – Williamsville South 23

The Spartans earned a hard fought ECIC II win over the Billies in a matchup that featured two full lineups. Starpoint won the pin battle with 8 falls to South’s 4. Starpoint is 1-0 in league action.

Wilson 42 – Barker/Royalton-Hartland 36

The Lakemen matched their league win total from the 2017-2018 season with a big N-O win on opening night over the rival Rams.

Thursday, 11/29

Spencerport 58 – St. Joe’s 15

The defending Section V Division 1 champion Rangers traveled to Buffalo and earned a win over the Marauders.

Grand Island 48 – Ken-Ton 21

The Vikings started their NFL title defense with a win over the Blue Devils. Six Grand Island wrestlers earned pins in the win.

Falconer 87 – Dunkirk 0

The powerful Golden Falcons picked up a big CCAA Div. I win. A handful of starters were not in the Falconer lineup.

Matches postponed due to weather:

Gowanda at Chautauqua Lake

Franklinville at Frewsburg
