The Holland Lady Dutchmen went on the road to take on the Eden Lady Raiders Tuesday night, coming into the game with 13 wins and zero losses on the season. This was the second meeting between both squads, with Holland winning the first match 65-57.
Tip off began and Eden got going right away. They started the game on a 16-2 run with three-point shooting by Jessica Zittel and Brooke Woodard. Rachel Wach scored six points along with Zittel’s seven, ending the first quarter up 18-10.
The Lady Dutchmen would try and get their offense going in the second with a three from Kierra Kline. Claire Pikett would convert in the low post twice, she finished with eight points in the first half.
Eden would keep their momentum going; four players contributed points on the board as they outscored their opponents 10-9 and finished the first half strong, up 28-19.
The third quarter resembled a bit of what happened in the second. Pikett did very well with her inside game, driving to the hole and converting on her layups, in addition to drawing fouls and going to the free-throw line. She finished shooting 4-of-5 from the charity stripe and put up 12 points in the third quarter.
Once again though, Eden responded with buckets of their own; Woodard finished with seven in the quarter, including hitting her second three-pointer in the game. Maggie Zittel, Ashley Ballou and Camryn Klawon each contributed with four points. Third quarter ended with Eden up 50-35.
The Lady Raiders continued their onslaught as the fourth quarter saw their lead extend to 20 (60-40), which would be their largest lead of the game. The Lady Dutchmen ended the game going on a 10-4 run, but the lead was insurmountable. Eden went on to win 64-50, giving their opponents their first loss on the season.
Brooke Woodard finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and dishing out 12 assists. Woodard’s 16 points now puts her two behind the all-time scoring record, which is currently held by Jenna Phillips with 1038. Phillips played for the Lady Raiders from 2007-2012.
“Brooke is our glue, she is what makes us go,” said Joe Dougherty, head coach of the Eden girls basketball team. “I would like for her to be more selfish and look for her shot a little more than she does.”
Jessica Zittel finished with 12 points along with seven rebounds; Klawon had 10 points and nine rebounds. Ballou and Maggie Zittel both finished with eight points.
For the Lady Dutchmen, Pikett led her team with 23 points; Ava Linder had 12 points on the night.
Holland throughout their season has shown what their high-power offense can be. They have gone on to score more than 80 points in a game six times, including their 102-50 win against Cleveland Hill back on Tuesday, December 17th. Tuesday night’s game saw them producing their lowest point total in a game this season.
“We concentrated on the three-point line and on the shooters out there, not letting them get good looks, make them put the ball on the ground,” Dougherty said. “We didn’t want to give up anything, but if we had to give up something, we were going to give up the inside.”
Eden improves their overall record to 11-5 on the year and are now 8-1 in their league. They play this Thursday night at home, facing Lackawanna.
Holland sits at 13-1 in their 2019-20 campaign and are now tied with Eden in league play. They’ll be at Tonawanda on Thursday night to take on the Warriors at 7 p.m.
